Change Over Time Essay Tips

Many of the same tips for the Comparative Essay will apply to the COT essay. The list of Change Over Time essays provides links to COT essays on site and essays still requested.

The change over time essay is focused on large global issues such as technology, trade, culture, migrations, the influence of religion, and biological developments. The question may concentrate on one cultural area or several. The heart of the COT is to describe some theme that has changed over time. This requires synthesis of a significant portion of a timeline. For example, a change over time essay might discuss world power shifts during the Cold War, but devote only one paragraph to the Cuban missile crisis. Likewise, a COT essay might look at early European democracy and support their analysis with passing comments on Athenian city states, Spartan oligarchies, and the results of the Peloponnesian war. It would not be appropriate to discuss details such as the Trojan horse and other specifics if extraneous to your theme. Only the most prominent names and dates would be worth mentioning, e.g., the signing of the Magna Carta by King John in 1215. While your study should provide you with a wealth of details, remember, you are writing an essay, not a research paper. Editing is often cutting out rather than adding information. Remember, you are trying to support a thesis, not simply paraphrase an encyclopedia article. The time period selected must demonstrate "change over time" on a global scale. For example, a description of the Mongols from 1203 to 1368 may, or may not, show significant change depending on the essay's theme.
