Summary:
WWII was started by a combination of the severe economic depression brought
about by WWI and Hitler's political, social Darwinism, that promised to return
Germany's national pride and destiny. The scapegoat became the Jews and other
peoples that did not fit into the Hitler's ideologies of a superior race. Germany
took over Poland and began the holocaust against the Jews.
Japan too had elevated ideas of nationalism. But they lacked the resources to
develop heavy industry. When they saw how world leaders appeased Germany's early
aggressions, Japan decided they could get away with claims to the Korean Peninsula
and SE Asia. Imperialist desires of expansion were at the heart of the Axis
aggression.
Germany miscalculated the strength of the Russian resistance and winter. (Like
Napoleon of a century earlier.) Japan miscalculated the impact of "waking
a sleeping giant" with its attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. When the USA
declared war against Japan, this of course lead the USA to fight against the
Axis powers. The Japanese had finally brought the USA into the European arena
of war.
When the violence of Germany's concentration camps was discovered, world sympathy
for the Jews finally led to the establishment of the nation of Israel.
After Japan was destroyed and forced to accept a democratic constitution based on that of the USA, Japan rebuilt her cities and became a economic superpower. Germany also rebuilt using the latest technology in her factories, thanks to the generosity of the USA Marshall Plan which assisted the whole of Europe rise from the ashes.
Ironically, the inintentional consequences of German and Japanese aggression
was the growth of their economies. Growth not because of winning WWII, but as
a result of losing WWII.
